Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova has beaten two-time former champion Jelena Jankovic in straight sets at the Italian Open.
Kuznetsova recorded a 6-1, 7-6 victory over the Serbian where she will now face Belarussian Victoria Azarenka who beat Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi 7-6(5), 6-3.
Jankovic couldn’t respond to her opponent’s penetrating groundstrokes in the opening set, with Kuznetsova executing her forehand in decisive time and gain.
In the second set, Jankovic broke her opponent twice after dropping her serve and forcing set points in the 12th game.
Kuznetsova managed to save them and maintained her patience through the tie-breaker, finishing the match with a backhand winner.
