Top seed Gilles Simon beat Italian Fabio Fognini for the second in as many weeks, bewildering his opponent 6-0, 7-5 in 74 minutes at the Estoril Open. No. 8 Simon, beat Fognini in Rome last week.
The 24 year-old Simon, dropped a meager 13 points in the first set and despite being broken twice in the second set, he rallied back to win his 17th match of the year. Fognini hit four double faults, winning 43 percent of service points. He drops to 9-11 this season.
The wildcard will appear in his fourth quarter-final of the year when he faces seventh-seeded Albert Montanes. Simon has reached two semi-finals this year in Marsielle (l. to Llodra) and Dubai (l. to Djokovic). He also reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open (l. to Nadal).
Montanes improves to 11-13 this year when he beat German Simon Gruel 6-2,6-2 in 72 minutes.
