World No.1 Dinara Safina won her first title in convincing fashion at the Internationali BNL d’Italia in Rome – providing immediate action to silence her critics.
Safina took over the top ranking form Serena Williams, despite not having a grand slam title to her credit. In today’s final she breezed past Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 6-2 in her fourth final of the year and two in as many weeks.
The 23 year-old likely still buoyed over her epic win against Venus Williams, edged a fluctuating first set.
In the second set, she won four games in a row and eliminated all chances that Kuznetsova could have a comeback. With this win, Safina is likely to be the firm favourite for the French Open.
