World No.8 Fernando Verdasco beat former Roland Garros champion Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-2 in an all Spainish clash.
There were exchange in breaks during the first set before Verdasco earned the decisive break to close the set 6-3. In the second set, Verdasco opened up a 2-0 lead but former No.1 Ferrero evened it 2-2.
The 25 year-old emphasised the gulf of their rankings to win the final four games in style. He will face either 12th seeded David Ferrer or Argentina’s Juan Monaco.
Verdasco has had an exceptional year in 2009, reaching the quarter-finals at all the events he’s entered. In his six previous visits to Madrid, his best result was a third-round appearance in 2004.
