World No.4 Novak Djokovic started off his Madrid campaign with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Oscar Hernandez.
The 21 year-old who surrendered his No.3 ranking to Scot Andy Murray, signalled his intention to get back the position he had held since 13 August 2007.
The Serbian raced out to a 3-0 lead, breaking serve early in the set before closing it out 6-3. Another break early in the second set established his control of the match and a second break in the ninth game secured the win in 1 hour and 38 minutes.
For a spot in the quarters, he faces Italian Andreas Seppi who he has never lost to, including victory in the Belgrade semi-finals last week.
