American No.1 Andy Roddick worked hard for his first win on clay this year against Tommy Haas with a 1-6, 7-6(9), 6-4 victory.
Roddick saved two match points in the second set tie-break before going on to defeat the former No.2. The 26 year-old converted on his 13th break point opportunity to go 4-3 up as Haas hit a forehand wide at 15-40, and held his own serve to win in 2 hours and 22 minutes.
This was Roddick’s first win on clay against Haas who still maintains a 7-5 lead in the career series. The World No.6 is playing in his first tournament since losing in the Miami quarter-finals to Roger Federer.
Roddick encounters tenth seed Nikolay Davydenko who capitalised on four of seven break point chances to defeat Frenchman Florent Serra 7-5, 6-3.
