World No.2 Roger Federer improved his career record over James Blake to 9-1 after beating the American 6-2, 6-4 in the third round at the Madrid Masters. It was the pair’s first meeting since the 2008 Olympic Games.
Federer improves to 23-6 in 2009 and 19-4 at the ATP World Tour 1000 clay-court tournament where he won in 2006 (d. Gonzalez) and runner up in 2007 (l. to Nalbandian).
Blake, who reached his 29th career final in Estoril (l. to Montanes) drops to 15-10 for the season and 2-6 at the Madrid tournament.
Federer next meets sixth seeded Andy Roddick who was gifted his place in the quarter-finals after Russian Nikolay Davydenko pulled out of the tournament with a leg injury.
