World No.5 Juan Martin del Potro broke the Big 4 party by defeating World No.3 Andy Murray 7-6(4), 6-3 in the quarter-finals.
Del Potro, who also reached the semi-finals in Miami this year, advances to his first clay-court ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final. The young Argentine is attempting to win his second title of the year after triumphing in Auckland earlier this year. Murray, served at 5-3 in the first set, but was broken back and ultimately taken into a tie-break.
The Argentine’s clean hitting and sheer brillaince proved too much for Murray, who moved to a career high No.3.
Del Potro next plays World No.2 Roger Federer in the semi-finals whom he has never beaten in four attempts.
