World No.20 Patty Schnyder claimed her third top 10 scalp in Madrid, taking out Jelena Jankovic in straight sets.
The pair exchanged breaks three times in the opening set, ultimately ending in a tie-break. A netted forehand from her Serbian opponent at 7-6 in the tie-break gifted the set to Schnyder.
Jankovic lead 2-0 in the second set, but couldn’t convert her lead due to her opponent’s beautiful shot making and reportiore ultimately leading to her 7-6(6), 6-3 loss in one hour and 47 minutes.
This loss is extremely disappointing for Jankovic who ended 2008 as No.1, and has failed to win a tournament in 2009. On the other hand, Schnyder achieved a heartening result on clay whose best performance this year was reaching the third-round in Rome.
