World No.1 Dinara Safina overcame erratic form to beat Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-2 in the semi-finals of Madrid.
After winning in Rome last week, Safina is in the running for a second consecutive clay-court title when she faces Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki.
Safina broke her opponent’s serve in the first game to love and raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set. Schnyder broke back immediately and started to expose the Russian’s flaws, but the top ranked woman’s player broke back three times to serve at 5-2 in the second set.
She wrapped up the win on her second match point when Schnyder sent a forehand wide.
