Former No.1 Maria Sharapova made a positive start in her comeback trail, beating Italian Tatiana Garbin 6-1, 6-7(8), 6-3 at the Warsaw Open.

The Russian showed no sign of rust in her game but was made to work hard before prevailing in 2 hours and 35 minutes.

Sharapova, who was handed a wildcard to the Polish capital, faces a difficult task in the next round as she is set to meet new top 10 star Caroline Wozniacki.

The Dane, who must first beat a qualifier/lucky loser in her first round match, reached the final of the Madrid Open before succumbing to Dinara Safina.
