Defending champion Anabel Mendina Garrigues recovered from a set down to progress to the second round, a day that four of  eight seeds crashed out of the tournament.

The No.1 seed, looked in early danger as she lost the first set to Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer 6-1.

Wickmayer, who won in Estoril two weeks ago, couldn’t maintain her form and eventually succumbed 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Garrigues, a three time winner of this event, will fancy her chances after a majority of the seeds fell.

After second seed Sybille Bammer exited on Monday, Tamarine Tanasugarn (fifth), Elena Vesnina (sixth), Anna-Lena Groenefeld (seventh) and Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy (eighth) also lost their opening encounters.
