Maria Sharapova’s comeback to the WTA Tour ended as she was convincingly beaten by Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko.
The three-time grand slam champion, who is playing her first singles event since August 2008, has dropped out of the top 100 and is now 126.
Sharapova came through her first two matches but the No.8 seed proved too much as she was beaten 6-2, 6-2.
Bondarenko will face Britain’s Anne Keothavong who became the first woman from her country to reach the semi-finals of a WTA clay-court event.
The 25 year-old, who has yet to reach a WTA Tour final, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Romania’s Ioana Raluca Olaru.
