World No.4 Novak Djokovic advanced to the second round of Roland Garros after a strong opening performance against Ecuadorian Nicolas Lapentti. His sublime performance saw him open up a 6-3, 3-1 lead over Lapentti before he was forced to retire with a ankle injury.
Djokovic opened up a 3-1 lead early in the first set in cool conditions that had earlier been interrupted by rain. With the early initiative, he was put in a better position when Lapentti injured his ankle at 2-5. The Guayaquil native then sought attention from the trainer and after strapping his ankle, he carried on to allow Djokovic to close out the set 6-3.
The Serbian then further added to Lapentti’s woes when he broke in the opening game of the second set and his opponent was forced to retire after the former No.3 opened up a 3-1 lead in the second set.
