No.2 seed Serena Williams squandered eight match points before sealing her place in the second round of the French Open after surviving a tough three setter against Czech Klara Zakopalova.
A upset looked possible when Zakapalova broke Williams in the decider to lead 2-1.
The American, who by that time had wasted five match points, looked to exit in the opening round but roared back to claim four games on the trot to move towards a winning position.
The Czech survived a further three match points as she launched a comeback, breaking to go 5-4 down, but Williams clinched the win on her ninth opportunity to seal a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 win in two hours and 25 minutes.
