Maria Sharapova relied on her battling qualities to come back from a break down in the deciding set to down No.11 seed Nadia Petrova in a mouth watering second round clash.
The No. 102 Sharapova, whose ranking has plummeted due to injury, was behind 4-2 in the decisive set to claim a 6-2, 1-6, 8-6 victory.
The former No.1, who required three sets to beat Anastasiya Yakimova, is playing in her first Grand Slam tournament since Wimbledon last year and her low ranking will be a threat to others in the draw.
A semi-finalist two years ago, she will next encounter Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova.
