Five-time former champion Roger Federer continued his quest for a record 15th major title with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 win over Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei in the first round of Wimbledon.

In his first grass court match of the year, Federer made just 10 unforced errors in a convincing start to his 2009 campaign. The Swiss bypassed Halle after winning his maiden French Open title.

With Nadal sidelined, the draw features just two players – 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt and German Nicolas Kiefer – who have triumphed over Federer on grass. Federer won five consecutive Wimbledon titles from 2003-2007 before losing a titanic clash against Rafael Nadal last year.

Federer will face Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who beat Agustin Calleri 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.
