Davydenko pushed to the limit

Russian Nikolay Davydenko came through in a mouth watering first round encounter at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, coming back to beat Spaniard Ivan Navarro 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 36 minutes.

Davydenko, who is playing here for the first time in four years, made four crucial saves on break points faced on serve in the decisive set and pounced on his single opportunity to win the match.

The former World No.3, will now face hometown favourite Michael Berrer, who recovered from a dreadful start to beat Austrian Stefan Koubek 0-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(4).
