World No.9 Fernando Verdasco survived one match point before triumphing over Austrian Daniel Koellerer 6-7(1), 6-2, 7-5 in his opening encounter at the Catella Swedish Open, Bastad.
Verdasco had the initiative, leading 3-0 before Koellerer raced back to win the next five games which saw the top seed trail 3-5. Verdasco hit back but the Austrian proved too much as he served out the first set.
Two breaks of serve in the second set saw the Spaniard back in the match but was quickly on the back foot as Koellerer broke to lead 3-1 in the decider. Nevertheless, Verdasco pounced back and managed to save a match point when serving at 4-5 before breaking his opponent to 15 and serving it out in three hours and nine minutes.
Verdasco will now face Argentine Juan Monaco, who beat Romanian Victor Crovoi 6-1, 7-6(1).
