Italian Fabio Fognini recorded his best win of 2009, defeating World No.11 Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 to reach his first semi-final in 12 months.

A rain delay at 4-4 in the decider proved fatal for Davydenko as his opponent came back out on court to win three of the last four games to knock out the No.2 seed in two hours and 19 minutes.

The 22 year-old Fognini last reached an ATP World Tour semi-final in Umag (l. to Verdasco) in July 2008 and is looking to reach his first ATP World Tour final in his career.

The 28 year-old Davydenko was looking to reach his third semi-final at Stuttgart after previously doing so in 2004 (l. to Canas) and 2005 (l. to Gaudio). The Russian drops to 20-9 for the season.

Fognini will now face Romanian Victor Hanescu who beat French lucky loser Alexandre Sidorenko 7-6(2), 6-4.
