Patty Schnyder has been made to wait one more year to end her 11-year drought on clay after being forced to retire injured in the first set of her quarter-final match against Anna-Lena Groenefeld at the Internazionali Femminili di Tennis di Palermo.

The second seed Schnyder, who last triumphed in Palermo in 1998, lasted just half an hour before forfeiting with her German opponent 4-3 ahead.

The Italians enjoyed home success with top seed Flavia Pennetta winning 6-4, 6-4 over France’s Aravane Rezai, while her compatriot Tathiana Garbin beat Olga Govortsova 6-2 6-1.
