Robin Soderling became the first local player to triumph at the Catella Swedish Open since his coach Magnus Norman won here in 2000. The second seed beat Juan Monaco 6-3, 7-6(4) for his fourth straight win over the Argentine.
The talented Swede, runner up to Roger Federer at Roland Garros, raced out to a 3-0 lead with the aid of a service break in the second game. Soderling went on to win 71 percent of service points in a set that lasted little over half an hour.
Soderling won six of six points on Monaco’s second serve in the first game of the second set, which he capitalised on his second break point opportunity.
The 25 year-old Monaco broke back to 4-4, but his opponent proved too much in the tie-break moving into a 4-1 and 6-3 lead.
