Stich launches comeback at age 40

Germany’s Michael Stich has returned to competitive tennis, 12 years after his retirement.

The 40 year-old Stich, teamed up with 21 year-old Mischa Zverev, but unfortunately lost 6-4, 6-2 to the Swedish-Australian pair Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley in the first round of the German Open.

Stich, who won Wimbledon in 1991 and has also reached the finals at Roland Garoos and the US Open, reached a career high of No.2 before announces his retirement in 1997.

Former World No.1 John McEnroe also made a brief doubles comeback, triumphing in San Jose in 2006 with Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman.
