Players defecting is something not new in sports, as exemplified in cricket where a large majority of South African born players are representing England.
In the case of tennis, we have seen Greg Rusedski switch from Canada to Great Britain, Jelena Dokic switching back and forth between Serbia and Australia and most recently, Alex Bogomolov switching from the US to Russia.
Are all these defective players doing it just for the money or are they really patriotic about representing their country? We will never know, but I have always believed that one should represent the country that has made them into the player they are today through their extensive training and support.
With that said, I don’t fully agree with Bogomolov’s decision to turn his back on a country that has provided him with a considerable amount of resources and commitment. But it was his personal decision in which we as tennis followers, can only respect.
