Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi were never the best of friends. Issues of trust and respect were always being thrown around the respective camps. Nevertheless, they have accumulated 26 doubles titles together, making them one of the the most successful doubles pairs.
The Indian duo, who have had an on-off relationship, teamed up for the 2011 season only to split again after a few months. Bhupathi has played with Rohan Bopanna this year while Paes has continued to experiment with a number of partners. It is such a pity that two of greatest doubles players from India fail to see eye to eye as they would of been a real medal chance at London.
Bhupathi’s decision to play with Bopanna has left Paes with no other option than to play with little known Vishnu Vardhan at the Olympics. The 39 year-old Paes has expressed his reluctance to play with Vardhan, questioning his experience and talent. Even though Paes may not be the nicest guy around, Bhupathi has done himself no favours by teaming up with someone he has had little success with.
