Marcos Baghdatis has decided that the best way to prepare for the Olympics is to get married. The Cypriot tied the knot with Karolina Sprem in her native Croatia a few days ago. The BBC has also revealed that she is pregnant with her first child.
Baghdatis burst onto the tennis arena in 2006, reaching the Australian Open final, the Wimbledon semi-finals and achieving a career high ranking of No. 8. The 27 year-old has been hampered with niggling injuries over the past few years, but in 2010, he became the only player to defeat Nadal and Federer while they were World No. 1. The Limassol native holds four ATP World Tour titles to his credit and has racked up 5 million dollars in prize money.
Unlike her husband , Sprem was not a well-known figure on the WTA Tour but has had her fair share of success. In 2004, she beat Venus Williams in the second round of Wimbledon, before losing in the quarter-finals to Lindsay Davenport. Sprem reached a career high ranking of No. 17 the same year and has won more than 200 matches on the professional tour. The Croat retired in late 2011 without a WTA title but has won a number of ITF titles.
